Who We Are

The Marine Technology Society was incorporated in June 1963 to give members of academia, government and industry a common forum for the exchange of information and ideas. Our guiding purpose is:

“To promote awareness, understanding, advancement and application of marine technology.”

Today, MTS boasts a membership of businesses, institutions, individual professionals and students who are ocean engineers, technologists, policy makers and educators.

MTS is governed by a Board of Directors, which comprises nationally elected leaders. Bruce C. Gilman, P.E.,is the current president. Biograhies on other members of the board are available online.

The MTS Council provides advice to the Board of Directors on the technical, business and financial affairs of the society.

The Council consists of the Board of Directors, the elected chairs of local sections and those professional committeechairs who request a seat on the Council.

Local MTS Sections focus on events and programs unique to their geographic areas, enhancing networking among local colleagues, businesses, universities and government/military offices.

MTS Professional Committees are technical interest groups that facilitate the exchange and transfer of technical information among professionals from academia, government and industry. Each professional committee focuses on the concerns of a specific subject area.

The number of professional committees varies annually, based on the relevance, importance and interest in a particular area or subject.

MTS also boasts a number of Student Sections, which are associated with specific universities.

The day-to-day operation of the society is carried out by a staff overseen by Executive Director Rich Lawson. Visit the Contact Us page on the MTS Web site for names and contact information of staff.
